Find Some Peace in Preparation

Though every woman’s birthing experience is unique, some steps can be taken to ease your mind and prepare yourself for the process. Preparing mentally and physically is vital to a smoother birth experience.

Here are some practical steps to preparing for birth and addressing your fears:

  • Address your birth fears: One of the best ways of alleviating fear is verbalizing it and talking it through with someone you trust and with a medical professional.
  • Take a birth class: Getting educated about birth will work wonders when it comes to easing your mind. Knowledge is power. With a birth class, you can expect to learn more about labor and delivery, recovery, and multiple strategies for managing (or even preventing) pain.
  • Protect your mind: Some women can become fearful when hearing many stories or negative things about birth. Be mindful of where you are mentally, and if needed, don’t watch certain TV shows, movies, or books that feed into your already existing fears.

Talk to Your Doctor

Speak with your OB/GYN, doula, or midwife for birthing advice and support. They may be able to ease your mind about certain fears and give you more clarity along the way, which can build your confidence.

Walking through the birth process with a medical provider is also essential. If you feel uneasy or unsettled, find another provider whom you feel comfortable with and feel supported in your birth plan.
